How Do You Know If a Hair Extension Method Is Actually Right for Your Hair?

The question we get most from first-time extension guests isn't "which method is best"; it's "which method is best for me." That distinction matters, because the honest answer is that no single method is universally better. Our extension stylists are trained across multiple methods specifically because of this, hair extensions aren't one-size-fits-all, and matching the right technique to your hair matters more than which one is trending.

The Methods We Work With

We offer hand-tied wefts, keratin bonds (K-tip), beaded extensions (I-tip), tape-ins, and a few other specialized methods — and we're not tied to one brand or system. That's intentional: it means the recommendation is built around your hair, not around what one product line happens to offer.

It Starts With Density, Not Preference

Before deciding between methods, we're looking at how much natural hair you actually have to work with. Fine or thinner hair can struggle to support the weight of certain methods comfortably over time, while thicker hair has more flexibility in what it can hold without added strain on the scalp.

Growth Pattern Matters More Than Most Guests Expect

Where your hair grows from, and how it grows out, affects how any method blends and how it needs to be maintained. A method that sits beautifully on one guest's head might show more visibly on someone whose hair grows in a different pattern or density near the hairline.

Scalp Health Is Part of the Conversation Too

Extensions put some degree of tension and weight on the scalp, no matter the method. If there's any existing sensitivity, thinning, or scalp condition, that changes which methods make sense and how long between maintenance appointments we'd recommend.

What We're Actually Checking During a Consultation

  • Current hair density and thickness, section by section

  • Growth pattern around the crown and hairline

  • Scalp condition and sensitivity

  • Your maintenance routine and how much upkeep you realistically want

  • Your hair's current health, extensions on already-stressed hair need a different plan

Why This Matters More Than the Method Itself

Two guests can walk in wanting the exact same look and walk out with two different methods, because the goal isn't matching a trend; it's matching what your hair can actually support long-term without compromising its health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are tape-in extensions better than hand-tied wefts? Neither is universally better — they solve different problems. Tape-ins tend to lay flatter and work well for finer hair, while hand-tied wefts can offer more volume for guests with denser hair. The right answer depends on your specific hair, not a general ranking.

Can extensions damage my hair? Any method can, if it's not matched to your hair or not maintained properly. That's why the consultation and the maintenance schedule matter as much as the install itself.

Is the extension consultation free? Yes, consultations are complimentary for every service we offer, extensions included. We'll assess your hair and talk through pricing before anything is booked.

Curious which method actually fits your hair? That's a conversation, not a guess. Come in for a Complimentary Extension Consultation, and we'll help you figure it out!

We'll see you soon, the Hazel Team.
