How Often Should You Get a Haircut?

The honest answer is that it depends on your cut and what you want from it. Short, precise styles usually need a trim every four to six weeks to hold their shape, while longer hair can often go eight to twelve weeks. If you're growing your hair out, you'll still want regular trims, just smaller ones. Here's how to find the right rhythm for your hair.

Short and structured cuts

Pixies, bobs, and anything with a clean line or close-cut nape look their best when the shape stays exact. Hair grows roughly half an inch a month, and on a short cut that's enough to change how it falls. Most guests with short styles find that four to six weeks keeps the cut looking intentional rather than grown out.

Medium and long hair

With more length, there's more room for the shape to soften gracefully. Layers usually start to lose their movement around eight to ten weeks, and one-length cuts can often stretch to twelve. A good sign it's time: your ends feel rough or tangle easily, or your hair just won't sit the way it did after your last appointment.

Growing your hair out

It sounds backward, but regular trims help hair grow longer. Split ends travel up the strand if they're left alone, and eventually that hair breaks off higher than a trim would have taken it. When you're growing it out, tell us at your appointment, and we'll remove only what's needed to keep the ends healthy, usually every 10 to 12 weeks.

Things that change the timeline

Color, heat styling, and texture all play a part. Lightened or heat-styled hair often needs trims a little more often to keep the ends healthy. Curly hair may need a different cutting schedule, depending on how your curls are shaped. And if you wear extensions, your own hair benefits from trims that keep it blended with the extension hair.

At your next appointment, ask us when to come back for your specific cut. We'll give you a timeframe that fits your hair, and you can reserve your next visit before you leave.
