What Happens at a Hair Extension Move-Up Appointment

A move-up is the maintenance appointment that keeps your extensions looking like your own hair. As your natural hair grows, the attachment points move further from your scalp, and a move-up brings them back up where they belong. Most methods need one every six to eight weeks, and keeping that schedule is the single biggest thing you can do to protect both your extensions and the hair underneath.

Why move-ups matter

As attachments grow down, they start to show when your hair moves, and the extensions can feel heavier because they're hanging from a longer stretch of natural hair. Shed hair, which everyone loses daily, also collects around the attachment points instead of falling away, and that's where matting starts. A timely move-up clears that out before it becomes a problem.

What happens during the appointment

The details depend on your method, but the shape of the appointment is similar. We remove or loosen the extensions, carefully detangle and clear away shed hair at the attachment points, then wash and condition your natural hair. Then the extensions go back in closer to your scalp: hand-tied wefts are reattached on a fresh row, I-tip beads are opened and moved up, and tape-ins are re-taped and reapplied. K-tips work a little differently because they're bonded, so we usually remove and replace them rather than move them.

It's also the moment to check how your own hair is doing, refresh your color if it's due, and adjust placement if anything has been bothering you.

How to prepare

Come with your hair dry and brushed through, especially around the attachments. If you've noticed anything between appointments, like an attachment slipping, a spot that feels tight, or a section that keeps tangling, let us know when you arrive so we can focus there. And if you've changed your routine or products, mention that too.

Stretching it too long

It's tempting to push a move-up a few extra weeks, but grown-out extensions are much more likely to tangle, mat, or put strain on your natural hair. If your schedule changes and you can't make your usual timing, text us, and we'll help you find the closest opportunity.

If you wear extensions and it's been more than six weeks, reserve your move-up in East Longmeadow, and we'll keep them looking like they just went in.
