Your First Waxing Appointment: How to Prepare and What to Expect
A good wax starts before you arrive. Hair length, what's in your skincare routine, and even your plans for the day after all shape how comfortable the appointment feels and how smooth your skin looks afterward. If it's your first time being waxed at Hazel Salon & Spa in East Longmeadow, here's how to get ready and what happens once you're in the room.
How long should hair be before waxing?
About a quarter inch, roughly the length of a grain of rice, is ideal. If it's shorter, the wax can't grip, so hairs get left behind; if it's much longer, it pulls more than it needs to. If you've been shaving, let it grow for about two weeks first. For brows, simply stop tweezing between appointments, so we have the full shape to work with.
Check your skincare first
This is the step most people don't know about. Retinoids, including over-the-counter retinol and prescription tretinoin, along with exfoliating acids, thin the outer layer of skin and make it more likely to lift or irritate under wax. Stop using them on the area for several days beforehand. If you take, or recently finished, an oral acne medication, waxing usually isn't recommended for about six months after you stop, so let us know before you reserve. It's also best to skip waxing over sunburn, broken skin, or right after a tanning session.
What happens during the appointment
We'll start by asking about your skin and anything you've used on it recently, then cleanse the area. Wax goes on in small sections and comes off quickly, and we finish by tidying any stray hairs and applying something soothing to calm the skin. Every brow wax at Hazel includes brow mapping, where we measure your brows to your features before shaping, so the result looks like you, only more polished.
The first wax is usually the most noticeable. It usually gets easier with regular appointments, as hair grows back finer and more evenly.
Aftercare for the next day or two
Redness usually fades within a few hours. For the next 24 to 48 hours, skip hot showers, saunas, heavy workouts, and tanning, and keep fragrance and strong products off the area. After that, gentle exfoliation a couple of times a week helps keep ingrown hairs away.
How often to come back
Most guests settle into a rhythm of every three to five weeks, depending on the area and how quickly their hair grows, with brows often on the shorter end. Staying consistent keeps hair on the same growth cycle, which makes each appointment smoother than the last.
